bin laden found in palace by military academy

A lot of guys got their security clearances elevated due to what happened last night,” said Lamont, who didn’t give his last name because of what he said were security reasons. “I lot of people got called back” overseas, he said, adding that his unit already was scheduled for deployment as early as two weeks ago.
The U.S. special forces operation that killed bin Laden took place Sunday at a mansion in Abbottabad, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) from the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.
Lamont, who's been in the service for 17 years, called into Atlanta radio station WVEE-FM (V-103) on Monday morning to voice support for U.S. troops. "I didn't call for the glorification for ourselves," he told CNN. "We don’t do this for the praise, but I wanted to do this for other servicemen."
Lamont said while Americans celebrated the death of bin Laden, it was a time of vigilance for elite military units. “It’s a joyous time, don’t get me wrong, but we also have to look for what’s to come. It's not over."

bin laden

fficials compared DNA of the person killed at the Abbottobad compound with bin Laden "family DNA" to determine if the 9/11 mastermind had in fact been killed, a senior administration official said.
Four others in the compound also were killed. One of them was bin Laden's adult son, and another was a woman being used as a shield by a male combatant, officials said.
[Updated 12:39 p.m. ET] The compound where Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces is located a bit more than 1,000 yards from a Pakistan Military Academy

iowans addicted to eagle nest cam

Thousands of computer users around the world continue to flock, many daily, to an Iowa website camera showing an eagle nest in Decorah.Boss just walked in and caught me (watching) again," said Tammy on the live chat Tuesday morning.
Tammy was one of more than 22,624 people connected to the live camera on Tuesday at 11:36 a.m. Two of the eaglets were clearly visible napping the sun Tuesday morning. All three eaglets are alive and doing well.
The third egg in the nest hatched last Wednesday.
Officials with The Raptor Resource Project said more than 11 million people had viewed the camera that is atop a tree at the fish hatchery in Decorah over the last couple weeks.
The first eaglet hatched on April 2 as thousands watched and the second on April 3.

iowa national guard killed in afghanstan

A second Iowa Army National Guard soldier has died in Afghanistan this week, family members said Thursday.
The family of Don Nichols confirmed his death Thursday. Nichols is a 2009 graduate of Waverly-Shell Rock High School in Waverly in northeast Iowa.
Nichols' step-grandmother, Susie Poock, told The Des Moines Register the family was notified Wednesday night. Poock said Nichols was a member of the 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry Battalion. The military has not confirmed Nichols' death.
KCNZ radio in Cedar Falls said flags are flying at half staff at Waverly-Shell Rock High School after school officials announced Nichols' death. KCNZ reported that Principal Ken Winter told them that an announcement was made at school Thursday.
The Iowa National Guard said Thursday morning that it plans a news conference Thursday night, but didn't provide more details about what was to be discussed.
The briefing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Officials said it is "regarding recent events in the Afghanistan theater of operations."
Officials said the news conference will be of special interest those in northeast Iowa. The briefing will be held at the Camp Dodge Freedom Center at 7105 NW 70th Ave. in Johnston.
The Guard announced a similar news conference on Monday night where it announced the death of Brent Maher, of Council Bluffs

japans ed.

Students in many districts across Japan brushed off their uniforms and shouldered their bookbags for the first day of the new school year on Wednesday.
But while most were worried about meeting their new teachers or what their class schedules might be, some were facing the threat of nuclear contamination or the loss of former classmates.
In Tokyo, a group of students evacuated from the Fukushima area began the school year in a new city and a new classroom.
Keisuke Takahashi, 7, is one of several children staying at a youth center in Japan's capital as their parents in the north work or take care of worse-off family members.
"I just got a letter from my mom," he said. "It says that she is hurting because we're separated. But she says don't worry, we will go home together after the nuclear power plant settles down."
"I haven't got used to the life yet, because I have to live separately from my mom," he said walking into the Minamisuna Primary School. "I miss her."
Up in northern Japan, where the worst devastation from last month's tsunami occurred, the new school year has been delayed several weeks. Dozens of schools were wiped out or too badly damaged to reopen in Miyagi prefecture.

Obama latino students

President Barack Obama took to the Spanish-language network airwaves Monday to discuss challenges in educating Hispanics students.
In a Univision-sponsored town hall meeting with Hispanic students and educators at Bell Multicultural High School in Washington, the president said to out-educate and out-innovate the global competition, the Latino community must play a key role in the future.
"Our workforce is going to be more diverse; it is going to be, to a large percentage, Latino. And if our young people are not getting the kind of education they need, we won't succeed as a nation," Obama said.
With several students and parents asking questions about immigration and deportations, Obama said the answer wouldn't be overnight. He hoped the DREAM Act, which would give kids who have grown up in the United States an opportunity to earn citizenship despite their family's immigration status, would be passed in the future.
"We didn't get it passed this time, but I don't want young people to be giving up because if people in the past had given up, we probably wouldn't have women's rights, we wouldn't have civil rights. So many changes that we've made had to do with young people being willing to struggle and fight to make sure that their voices are heard," said Obama.
Carrie Cofer, an English teacher at Lincoln-West High School in Cleveland, says one challenge she faces with her Hispanic students is that they haven't been in the United States long enough to become proficient in English.

Obama leads education plan

First lady Michelle Obama invited more than 20 accomplished women to the White House on Wednesday, asking them to serve as mentors for area high school students.
The women, along with the first lady, fanned out across the District of Columbia and surrounding suburbs in the afternoon visiting six local high schools encouraging the teenagers to follow their dreams and work hard to get there.
"There is no magic to being here. You know, Barack and I were not born with silver spoons in our mouths and connections and money and resources. A lot of why we're where we are today is because we worked hard. We felt a deep passion for getting our education," the first lady told students at Ballou High school in Washington.
She recalled having to get up as a child at 6:30 a.m. to ride a bus for an hour and a half to attend a better high school across town, for better preparation for college.
"I know what it feels like to struggle to get the education that you need. In so many ways, I see myself in you all," Mrs. Obama shared. "And I want you to see yourselves in me, so that you're not looking at me just as the first lady of the United States."
Mrs. Obama's events on Wednesday were scheduled as part of the end of National Women's History month.
At Washington's Woodson High school, the four mentors included an Air Force general, a TV network executive, an actress and a gymnastics champion who all answered questions for more than 20 female students.

Chris Brown apologizes for 'GMA' outburst

Chris Brown is apologizing for his outburst at the "Good Morning America" studios on Tuesday, when he stormed off the set following questions about his 2009 assault on ex-girlfriend Rihanna and stared down the producer responsible for the segment.
According to an ABC report, the hair and make-up staff  called security when Brown retreated to his dressing room because of the loud noises coming from the space. It was later discovered that the thick glass of the dressing room window had been smashed.
"First of all, I want to apologize to anybody who was startled in the office, or anybody who was offended or really looked, and [was] disappointed at my actions," Brown said during a recent appearance on BET's "106 & Park." "Because I'm disappointed in the way I acted."
Brown admitted that he got emotional, but explained that he was angry that "GMA" anchor Robin Roberts went beyond the "talking points" that his camp had submitted to the news show.

Charlie sheen troubles

Warner Bros. Television has fired actor Charlie Sheen from its comedy "Two and a Half Men" after a two-week public meltdown by the star that has included attacks on the show's creator.
"After careful consideration, Warner Bros. Television has terminated Charlie Sheen's services on 'Two and a Half Men,' effective immediately," the company said in a statement issued Monday.
"This is very good news," Sheen said in a statement to TMZ. "They continue to be in breach, like so many whales.
"It is a big day of gladness at the Sober Valley Lodge because now I can take all of their bazillions ... and I never have to put on those silly shirts for as long as this warlock exists in the terrestrial dimension."
Sheen, 45, has been known for his highly publicized marital, legal and substance abuse problems as much as his acting. The show was put on hiatus after he entered a rehabilitation program in January, and production was halted after Sheen blasted show co-creator Chuck Lorre and Alcoholics Anonymous in a February 24 radio interview.

Libya

Libyans gathered Thursday in the capital for the funerals of 13 people who Moammar Gadhafi's government said were victims of a coalition airstrike.
The government showed footage of the airstrike on state television and said 16 people had been killed. Coalition leaders have said repeatedly that coalition jets have dropped precision bombs on military targets and there have been no civilian casualties so far in the aerial war.
CNN could not independently verify the circumstances of the deaths or who the victims were. Regardless, Gadhafi's message was loud and clear: innocent people were wrongly killed and the Libyan people will fight back against what state television called "crusader colonial aggression."

Japan tsunami

A magnitude 9.0 earthquake hit northern Japan on March 11, triggering tsunamis that caused widespread devastation and crippled a nuclear power plant. The amount of radioactive iodine in Tokyo's tap water dropped considerably in a test Thursday morning, down to a level that would be considered safe for infants to drink, the city's government said.
Tests from 6 a.m. Thursday at the Kanamichi Water Purification Plant, which provides water to 23 wards in Tokyo as well as five other cities, showed 79 becquerels of radioactive iodine per kilogram of water. A becquerel is a measurement of  radioactive intensity by weight. This is below the 100 becquerel level, the maximum that could be considered safe for infants ages 1 and younger.

Declined! Your debit card may soon be denied for purchases greater than $100 -- or even as little as $50.
JPMorgan Chase, one of the nation's largest banks, is considering capping debit card transactions at either $50 or $100, according to a source with knowledge of the proposal. Why? Because of a tricky thing called interchange fees.
Right now, every time you swipe your debit card, your bank charges the retailer an average fee of 44 cents, which it shares with its partners. Those little fees, however, add up to about $16 billion per year, according to 2009 data from the Federal Reserve.
But as part of the Wall Street reform legislation that was passed last year, these fees are being slashed. The Fed is currently proposing rules that would go into effect in July and would cap interchange fees  at 12 cents.

vegan diet for dogs

It began when Shelley Boyle's veterinarian recommended she stop feeding meat and dairy to her beloved mutt, Cleo, to determine whether a food allergy was to blame for the dog's chronic ear infection.
Boyle's interest was immediately piqued. She had been a vegan for nearly two years, after deciding to cut meat, eggs and dairy from her diet for health and ethical reasons. But she never considered the possibility that she could align her dog's diet with hers.
"I've had animals all my life and when I did look into a vegan diet for my cat, I read that cats can't be vegan ... so I went to the conclusion that we can't do this for Cleo," says Boyle, an environmental consultant and part-time vegan baker from Studio City, California.

Lohan returns to court...Again..

Actress Lindsay Lohan heads back to court Thursday to say if she will accept a plea deal on a felony charge of stealing a $2,500 necklace.
If a plea deal is not reached in Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Keith Schwartz's courtroom, the case will go to another judge for a preliminary hearing and a possible trial, he said.
At her last appearance in February, the judge warned Lohan that any plea deal would involve jail time.
"If you plead in front of me, you are going to jail, period!" Schwartz told Lohan during the February 23 hearing.
Lohan's lawyer Shawn Chapman Holley previously said her client would welcome a plea deal, but only if it did not involve going to jail.

Warner Bros. Television has fired actor Charlie Sheen from its comedy "Two and a Half Men" after a two-week public meltdown by the star that has included attacks on the show's creator.

good sportsmanship in Central washington softball

Western Oregon senior Sara Tucholsky had never hit a home run in her career. Central Washington senior Mallory Holtman was already her school's career leader in them. But when a twist of fate and a torn knee ligament brought them face to face with each other and face to face with the end of their playing days, they combined on a home run trot that celebrated the collective human spirit far more than individual athletic achievement.
Both schools compete as Division II softball programs in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Neither has ever reached the NCAA tournament at the Division II level. But when they arrived for Saturday's conference doubleheader at Central Washington's 300-seat stadium in Ellensburg, a small town 100 miles and a mountain range removed from Seattle, the hosts resided one game behind the visitors at the top of the conference standings. As was the case at dozens of other diamonds across the map, two largely anonymous groups prepared to play the most meaningful games of their seasons.

unsportsmanlike soccer

Last weekend in La Liga Barcelona kept up their seemingly unstoppable charge to the Spanish title with a dramatic 3-2 at bottom club Osasuna, having trailing 2-1 with 15 minutes remaining. Yet the match was spoiled by a series of tit-for-tat exchanges of bad sportsmanship between the sides which marred an otherwise fantastic game.
Bad blood started emerging after a bizarre incident early on in the game after a poor tackle from Josetxo left Sergio Busquets poleaxed on the floor in pain. Lionel Messi picked up possession of the ball when he spotted his fellow Barca player prostrate on the turf. Immediately the Argentine stop playing, but rather than booting the ball into touch so that assistance could be called from the sidelines, Messi seemed to gesture to the surrounding Osasuna players for them to kick the ball out of play. But the Osasuna players refused to stop playing, stole the ball and continued attacking.

james franco at the grammys with hathaway

Let's keep it real: The Twitter chatter about the 83rd Annual Academy Awards on Sunday night was way more entertaining than the actual show.
There was lots of sharp criticism of Hollywood's biggest event out there in the land of social networking, with the brunt of it aimed at hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco.
The duo of actors were even the subject of a trending topic slugged #youngandhiposcars with the consensus being the show was anything but.
"I'm almost certain Franco & Hathaway thought this was a dress rehearsal,"

charlie sheen: im tired of pretending that... im NOT special

In interviews with two television networks that aired Monday, Charlie Sheen said he has cured his substance abuse addictions with his mind -- and alleged that CBS, which put his sitcom on hiatus, is trying to take his money and destroy his family.
Sheen said he would go back and finish the season of "Two and a Half Men," which CBS halted last week after Sheen called a radio show. But, he said, because of his psychological distress, he wants $3 million per episode rather than the $2 million he was making.
"I'm tired of pretending like I'm not special," Sheen told NBC. "I'm tired of pretending like I'm not bitching a total freaking rock star from Mars. And people can't figure me out. They can't process me. I don't expect them to. You can't process me with a normal brain."
He later said he has "tiger blood and Adonis DNA."
CBS and Warner Bros. Television said in a joint statement last week that "Based on the totality of Charlie Sheen's statements, conduct and condition, CBS and Warner Bros. Television have decided to discontinue production of 'Two and a Half Men' for the remainder of the season."

kanye and hype turn on all the lights

 http://marquee.blogs.cnn.com/2011/02/22/kanye-and-hype-williams-turn-on-all-of-the-lights/
It's not the first time Kanye West has linked up with Hype Williams, but it might be the duo's most confusing collaboration.
Over the weekend, West released the video for “All of the Lights,” the fourth single off his critical and commercial darling, “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.”
The vid follows a small black girl as she walks through a snowy maze of high-rise housing all alone. From there, an opening credit sequence - taken straight from the playbook of the French thriller “Enter the Void” - shoots out lyrics to the song in a strobe-light fury that could make some queasy.
The video then cuts to a shot of a scantily-clad Rihanna and a James Dean-esque (thanks to that red jacket) Kid Cudi, and none of it seems to make any correlation to the opening narrative.

americans hijacked on yacht

http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/africa/02/22/somalia.us.yacht/index.html

A round-the-world boating adventure ended tragically Tuesday for four Americans, whom pirates shot to death after capturing their yacht in the Indian Ocean last week, U.S. officials said.
The 58-foot vessel, named the Quest, was being shadowed by the military after pirates captured the ship off the coast of Oman on Friday. Officials had said earlier Tuesday it was less than two days from the Somali coast.
Ship owners Jean and Scott Adam and Phyllis Macay and Bob Riggle were found shot after U.S. forces boarded the vessel about 1 a.m. ET, officials said.
The forces responded after a rocket-propelled grenade was fired at a U.S. Navy ship about 600 yards away -- and missed -- and the sound of gunfire could be heard on board the Quest, U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Mark Fox told reporters.
